The Firehouse Cafe

Due to unexpected sunshine yesterday, we decided against the movies and went to the zoo, despite freezing temperatures (I swear it's colder this year in Seattle than in Munich). And since we've been taking pictures of zoo animals ever since we got that very first camera, we decided against them yesterday (or if you want to get technical, I did). That did not stop me from lugging the camera around my neck all day though, and good thing too, or we might have missed this (picture on right). You see, we kept her home yesterday so she'd take a nice nap and be rested...but it backfired and she was just grumpy. So we took her to the zoo and she held out through the whole freezing trip and died when we got in the car. Only, we were frozen through and since we wer ein Kylene's neighborhood and apparently the best cafe for chai lattes is in her neighborhood, so of course we went. Mom wanted to stay in the car and let Georgia continue to sleep, but I (rightly) guessed that she would just keep on sleeping, even if we took her out. She did. So we put her in an armchair and every customer who came in, stopped, stared and giggled, and then exclaimed at how adorable she was.

She did not wake up until we left and put her back in the carseat.

Now another thing, check out her hat. That was a present from Auntie Kylene and after she figured out that it was a kitty hat, she loved it and when she sees it, she says: kitty! Which leads into a bit of news that i have kept to myself, Georgia can say a few words and guess what her first word seems to have been? "Kitty" Yup my baby loves kitties. Maybe her Daddy will finally get a clue and let us get one! And her other two first words were: "Georgia" and "hi". Okay, well only "hi" actually sounds like "hi", the other two are hilarious but untypable.

So anyway. Before things go poof on me again, I'm sending you to flickr for a few more zooish pictures and signing out!

when blogging hates you

So I'm up until nearly 1am last night, trying to get that last blog entry up and working when I not only lose the internet, my browsers all crash one after the other until it won't even let me edit the entry anymore and everything I had written after a certain point, was gone. So I gave up. And that is why the last entry ends so abruptly.

Whatever. New day. Sun is shining, internet is once again working from two computers, I am going to finish uploading pictures and even stick a few in here, thereby sticking my tongue out at the powers-that-be who were trying to keep this blog pictureless last night!

So anyway, here goes:

The Holiday & What Not To Wear

There was one thing I really wanted to do while on vacation this year, I really, really wanted to go see The Holiday and just laugh. So I finally convinced a sick Mom and a grumpy Sister (who avoids movie theaters like the plague) to go with me today and I think they were both pleasantly surprised. I have to say, I loved that movie. I'm admittedly a bit emotionally loaded right now, and spent most of it in tears...but that's not always a bad thing! The best part of the movie was the character that doesn't make an appearance in the previews, because as Kylene said: they're selling a love story, not a story about an old guy...but you know, I might have cried the hardest during his finale scene...

Anyway, total chick flick, but better than I expected. I thought it would be cheese on a stick, something to just see and have fun with. I wasn't expecting to cry all the way through and have squeaky eyes the rest of the day.

We're still officially without internet. A very kind neighbor gave us access to their wireless for now, we managed to make it work on this one computer, and I just figured it out on the PC, so if I don't die of exhaustion before looking, editing and uploading pictures, maybe this post will not be entirely sans photos...no promises though.

Just a few more days of vacation and the dread and depression are already setting in. I don't know why it's happening so fast this year, maybe because the vacation has seemed like one oops after another with a lot of wasted time, a lot of sickness and a lot of stress and now it's nearly over. Whatever it is, it's making me the polar opposite of Miss Manners...plus there is the looming trepidtation of Sven having to go to Russia for at least 2, if not 4 weeks with the new year and a major birthday for ME, on a MONDAY by myself. Just lots of things to make you feel like a big fat meany.

Oh and then there's the whole sweater thing. Who is not cold this winter? Yah, so whereas past NW Winters left hundreds of lovely colorful, wool sweaters for the buying, the winter of 2006 is giving me nothing. People, I'm cold! I had honestly hoped to increase my wardrobe by one or two sweaters this year, modern ones that also fit, ya know? Instead, I find nothing but thin thin polyester and cotton blends, cardigans or pullovers so thin, they need a layer on top of them! Hello? The sweater is my top layer please! So I've been in a few stores and browsed a few online with no luck.

Past Christmases yielded an Old Navy Gift Card in stockings, one that would go to quite a generous helping of new clothing. Stockings now yield cash, in case the receiver doesn't want clothes, or clothes at Old Navy, in the same amount as the gift cards, yet when the shopping spree was over, I had exactly one pair of pants, one shirt, and one pair of pj's and the money was gone. Same store, same me (okay, different body shape) so what happened? Did the store not have a good or large selection? Have I become that picky? Why did I walk away with so little when I went in with so much potential?

Maybe it's TV. At home, I watch LOST and GA and stuff that is mindless and so non-reality it couldn't be any more different than real life. Here, I watch TLC's What Not to Wear. I don't just watch it, I'm addicted to it. Why don't they have this kind of stuff in Germany? So anyway, you are sitting there watching this frump of a woman (because it is almost always a woman) be transformed and suddenly you want to shop too. You want to be transformed, or at least get new, trendy, fashionable or fun clothes. Only, you don't have $5000 to spend, so the fun gets sucked right back out again.

Whatever. Someone tell me where the sweaters are, please?

So since I came up with a big fat zero for myself this morning regarding sweaters, I moved to the little girl's department and filled my hands with outfits for Georgia instead. Heck, she looks cute in anything you put on her. So I was grabbing 18 month sizes when I realized that these fit her now, and maybe I should be stocking up on the next size...

Merry Christmas!

Okay, so this was supposed to be a post separate from the visit to Santa Claus, but ever since we got power back and moved back to the Eastside, the internet and telephones have decided not to work. So I'm jumping in here fast as I can to wish all my loyal blog readers a very merry christmas and to tell you that Georgia hated Santa...

The terrible thing about this, is it isn't even the worst, she screamed and screamed and had her arms out to me, it was so pathetic. They kept her there and had Santa hold down her hands, so in the official santa photo, she's just crying, but her hands are out of her face...This is one Sven snapped while waiting for them to finish so I could get my baby back. Why exactly do we do this to our kids?

She was actually really enjoying the wait to see Santa, they had the line wet up so we were walking thru Santa's Workshop and there was a little boy behind us that she flirted with (he screamed when it came time to sit in Santa's lap as well, that poor Santa...).

This was also our last day out and about because right after it, we all came down with nasty colds, one right after the other. Georgia had been feeling nasty earlier in the week and we thought she was on the road to recovery, but when I came down with the same thing, it hit her again, much harder, so the two of us have been suffering from the same thing simultaneously. Now we are on the mend, but Daddy, Auntie Kylene and Grandma are showing symptoms, despite increased intake of different herbal remedies against germs...

Yes, it's been a rather sick Christmas for us this year...Plus, due to increased working hours at his store, Grandad has not been able to spend much time at  home and poor sick Miss Mae is still scared of him and won't go near him. \

All right, updates enough. I need to get this published before out internet runs off again. Merry Christmas!

We survived the storm...

okay, well in all truth, we missed the storm, we didn't even know anything about it until we landed in Seattle (an hour late) and heard the first passenger ask her family whether or not they had power. We were apparently lucky to land at all! We headed to Kylene's for three days while we waited for Mom and Dad to get power back. They were lucky, of the million or so people without power, they were only without for 3 days and were able to stay with Kylene (who never lost power) the whole time. Anyway, we returned to Woodinville yesterday afternoon and now that we are more or less settled in, G is sleeping like a log. She seems to have caught a cold, was grumpy and a bit feverish yesterday and although she was awake and fussy from 4am -  6am this morning, after a warm bottle, she went back to sleep and is still sleeping now, at 10!

The plan was to get an early start and visit Santa (as well as bringing Mom's Mac to the Apple Store since there were problems and it is no longer working - when it rains it pours, right?) but G sabotaged us. We are all up, showered, dressed, we've eaten and are now just hanging out, waiting for the baby to decide to wake up!

I think she is enjoying having the bed to herself. It is rather squishy to share a queen bed when you are used to a king!

The flight itself was rough, but we managed. G had trouble sleeping so she just didn't. Then she would get very very very upset and frustrated and screamed and lashed out. She fell asleep for both landings and had maybe an hour from Copenhagen to Seattle. Rough going for Mom and Dad, or Mom at least, as she insisted on sitting in my lap and left her Daddy to nap most of the flight.

Let me just say, I can wait for the return flight.

We've been to get the Christmas Tree and got some silly pictures of our girl in a little sleigh pulled by toy puppies, but it turns out, we can't get out pictures off the camera without our card reader, so until we figure something out, my entries are going to be a little bare of pictures...

Our tree however, the one we got at Swanson's in Seattle, is absolutely beautiful. Kylene's roommate picked it out for us and held it aside so we'd have something decent by the time we finally got there, and she has taste! And in front of the fireplace, next to the big tree, is a teeny miniature tree that Georgia almost decorated herself, in between wearing her garland and jingling her jingle bells.  I must take pictures!

Maybe it's time to go wake a babyl...

and we're off...

In a few hours that is - well, I guess we get to sleep a few and then we're up early so we can take care of all the last-minute stuff that always pops up, no matter how prepared we are.

suitcases are packed, except for toiletries and baby sleeping bags and kitties...not much left standing in our way.

Check out those molars...

and she's got them on top as well...

In the midst of pre-packing-vacation stress. Last-minute errands (int'l insurance, lost lohnsteuerkarten, etc. oh yah, that's Sven's To-Do List...). Plus, normal every-day kind of life as well, Sport, playgroup, girl's night out, daily lunches, shopping etc. I had wonderful news this morning though. A friend had gone to her obgyn last week to confirm her pregnancy and the doctor could not find the baby - just an empty shell. She had my friend wait a torturous week before re-checking with the plan to schedule a d&c. My friend was devestated and you know I felt her pain. She's such a happy, bubbly person - you know the kind, the kind EVERYone likes? She's the girl everyone wanted to be friends with because she's fun and intelligent and self-confident. Yah, you know the type. Well, she was so quiet last week, so not-herself (understandable) and I worried - because that is what I do.

Saw her yesterday at Sport and wished her luck etc., for her appointment today and didn't think I'd see or hear from her again until the New Year. Ah, but here comes the good news! I got a phone call from her this morning after her appointment and the baby is THERE! it's all good, she was at the doc's too early or something last week...So there's some happy news that had to be shared.

Otherwise, packing is going something like this:
scenario: I pull out what needs to be packed, fold the clothes and pile them neatly. Georgia comes along and pulls them all down onto the floor and chooses one favorite piece and drags it through the apartment.

scenario: I am sorting things to be packed and Georgia is busy putting her big Pooh Bear into the little suitcase and shutting it, then fussing because she can't get it back open again. Stop Everything. Mommy to the rescue, I open the suitcase and we start the whole charade again.

scenario: Suitcase is full of clothes and they are belted down with straps so G cannot get them back out. I start piling gifty things on top and for every two things I put in, Georgia drags one back out.

Yah. Packing. Plus, I only have two suitcases up here. Unable to get down to the basement for more while I have her on my hands because I can't carry her AND suitcases upstairs, and I cannot let her loose in the basement - it is a toddler's dreamland...

So why didn't I get the suitcases up while she was napping? Or pack? Because I wasted her whole nap in iTunes buying Christmas albums. Did I ever mention that this is my absolute favorite holiday and I am always looking for new Christmas music? Yah. Nabbed
A Christmas Together by John Denver and the Muppets as well as A Winter's Night: Best of Christmas which is by a bunch of contemporary artists and you want to know how I stumbled onto it? I was wasting, I mean REALLY wasting time trying to find the aritsts and albums and song names of this Christmas Mix CD that my cousin sent me years ago. She sent it without any info though...so I'm on iTunes looking for the artist of this particular version of 'Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer' that she put on it when I see that Jack Johnson sang that song as well. Thinking he did a whole Christmas album (cool) I clicked on the 'view album' button and landed at 'A Winter's Night' and hey, who can say no to Sarah Maclachlan singing Christmas Carols? Yah. Not me. Plus, Snoopy's Christmas is on there. Bonus!

So yah. Total time waster today. I admit. And then G refused to go to bed tonight. So we got her back up and she helped Sven eat his dinner (this is after she had her own dinner - guess potatoes didn't do it for her, she wanted his leberkäse...) and then he put her back down - but with a bottle because she just did NOT want to sleep.

So now it is 10:30pm and I've done no more work on packing, cleaning or well, anything. We are out of milk and bread and cheese and still need to get through another day and a morning. Looks like a trip to the supermarket to get stuff that we'll only eat part of and that will go bad before we get back home.

Logistics. I'll never get it down!

Good night.

issues...issues...issues

I have an excuse for the Silence after promising to update: internet has been so sporadic, I am lucky to get online at all and then get kicked off after a few seconds...

So let me just recap the weekend, as it was a weekend of weekends...

Went to Ikea on Saturday to get a few things for the holidays. It was a good trip, not too full, Georgia had fun, ate a whole plate of Ikea noodles with tomato sauce and then fell asleep in the car on the way home and continued to sleep at least an hour after we got home. Once she woke up, she got a bottle, watched her DVD and then we packed her up for another trip out - to the grocery store and 'mall' where we planned on getting xmas gifts.

I gave her apples in the car and that must have been a VERY bad idea. She got a big chunk stuck in her throat and gagged it up which started a nasty chain reaction in which she puked up all of the apples she'd been eating, the milk she'd drunk and her whole huge plate of noodles from ikea - some not even digested. She puked all over her jacket and the carseat while Sven was parking and then started crying for me to pick her up...

I got her out of the jacket and mostly cleaned up, and had her in my lap to finish cleaning her up. MISTAKE, says the inexperienced new mom. She then proceeded to empty everything else in her stomach, all over her dress (which had been saved by the jacket) and me - both our legs, my scarf and my jacket, which is a teeny part cashmere and has to be dry-cleaned. *sigh*

It smelled awful. I had to pee and we still had to get in there and shop because it was our last chance before we take off on Friday. We got to the supermarket where neither of us had a euro on us to get a shopping cart. Things were getting stressful, with a very crowded area, a stinky fussy baby and well...I did have a euro in my jacket pocket, so Sven went back to the car, to get it while I went into the store with g. I was looking for airplane entertainment books but spent most of my time chasing after a very happy baby who was busily carrying every book there was to a different spot.

sven finally came and had to get his magazine and was doing that while i tried to put stinky (very stinky, hard not to puke yourself stinky) georgia in the shopping cart. her leg got stuck because she wouldn't put them THRU and she started screaming bloody murder and refused to sit in the cart. Sven finally comes back, takes her and we head down.

we were in and out like lightening because i couldn't deal with georgia's smell, she refused to sit in the shopping cart and my bladder went wacko again. *sigh*

so we went home, i ran in, peed, grabbed a new jacket for me and for g and we went to aldi to get diapers and milk and a few odds and ends - by the end of it, she was screaming again, too tired.

got her home, changed and gave her something to eat (mistake, had i only known) and then cleaned her up. headed to bed and she curled up next to me and i thought she was going to go right to sleep, but no... the next thing i hear...yup. g puking. *sigh*

back up, change G into new jammies, change the sheets on the bed and then sent sven in to put her to bed and i made dinner.

meanwhile, internet won't work and i try to call  mom because I'm just so tired and done with it all. it rings forever with no pick-up and no answering machine, which means she's talking with someone else. finally she answers and when I say: "hi, it's me," she hangs up on me. grrrr. that means she didn't hear me.

call BACK and it rings forever again and when she finally answers with a VERY irritated 'hello?' I say: It's ME!

she goes: oh! I just blew a fuse, can I call you back?

over half an hour later the phone finally rings:

mom: "did you just call here and I told you I'd call back?"
me: "YES"

oops...

turns out, she had been talking to my sister when i called and she thought i was my sister. she didn't figure out her mistake until my sister called HER back and said: you hung up on me!

mom said: no i didn't, i told you i blew a fuse and would call you back...

kylene: no you didn't.

mom: uh, oh. who was I talking to?

guess that should teach me to not say my name when calling home.

Sunday morning seemed to be starting out fine. g was in a gREAT mood. ate, played la la la. i started laundry - but could not get online.

was cleaning up the desk back here when i had to start lunch. lunch was good - g ate her whole plate and then when sven went to put her down for her nap, she started screaming. so i brought her a bottle and she drank the whole thing and fell asleep in the process.

things go downhill from here.
still can't get online and the washer isn't working. the first load was fine. second refused to spin. i go down and have a washer full of water and very soaked clothes. this was the load that included all the puked-on things that weren't going in the dryer.

waste tons of time trying to get the washer to spin - no luck. go up and get sven out of bed and make him deal with it while i fight with the internet - even called the damn support hotline. 12 cents a min. during the 'if you want X - press 1, if you want Y, press 2"...

only to have them say: due to a high number of problems, the wait-time is very long. If possible, please go online and report your problem there. this phone call will now cost you 1.24...

I got so pissed, I hung up.

sven finally got the washer working.

now the microwave doesn't seem to be heating.

THAT was my weekend. And today started just as wonderfully regarding internet. NADA. Finally on tonight and typing this up as fast as possible, but I am exhausted and headed to bed.

Nikolaus Tag...

061206_0275 Happy St. Nikolaus Tag! This year, I remembered, although we admittedly botched it. The gift was waiting for this day on sven's nighttable for a week and G pulled it down a few times, so it wasn't a surprise when she got up this morning and ran away with the shoe and left the goodie bag behind...

So we sat down with her and showed her how to open the bag and she squealed and oohed and ahhed and ripped and tore, and bit and was very happy.

The other thing I botched? Pictures. What is with me and pictures lately? Can't remember to take them. so no shoes filled with goodies, just a quick shot of G and Sven opening an egg...

Hope your Nikolaus Tag is fabulous, fabulous.

In other news, went to Dresden and the Striezelmarkt on the weekend - a very very few pictures here:
Striezelmarkt

A very whiny baby is calling me now so I'm off. Hopefully have more time later to share the visit with the in-laws and decorating for advent etc - or how my baby has become a squealer and a whiner (I much prefer the squeals) and then there's the fact that she turned 14 months on Friday and I couldn't write a letter because we were on the road to see Opa and Oma...

So yah. I gotta be back. Remind me. Give me some shout outs in the comments to get my butt in gear and post!

That all said, this butt did get itself in gear and European Christmas cards went in the mail yesterday. How about that?! American Cards will go in the mail on the 16th or 18th - but I added the extra 4 numbers to every single zip - so they shouldn't take long to arrive.

Okay - and we're off.

Spaghetti Betty...

061124_0154I've never liked pictures of babies with spaghetti-covered faces...

yah, totally gross, right? it's the flash, the flash just makes it that much more disgusting. No flash gave me blurry photos that weren't as gross, but they were well, blurry.

So why take the photos in the first place? Because after giving me hell about eating...anything at all, she wouldn't STOP eating the spaghetti...and after I stopped doing it for her, she proceeded to pick up every last noodle herself, thus: spaghetti face. Oh yah, but why did I take pictures of the grossness? Because while doing it, she kept giving me this totally 'frech' grin and giggling - and that needed to be recorded.

We went to our first Weihnachtsmarkt this weekend. Bad Tölz opened early (the rest open next weekend with the first of advent) and we headed over to have a look. We maybe should have stayed at home, as Georgia was coming down with a nasty cold, but I couldn't abide the thought of listening to her whine all day (had enough of that today...) so off we went. Weather so warm, people were eating ice cream - at a Christmas Market. You're supposed to drink glühwein at a Christmas Market, not eat ice cream!

Of course, Georgia refused to sit in her stroller and had to run around. Bad Tölz's main street however, is on a hill and paved with very uneven cobblestones, so Sven brought her up to this stage and let her run around on that instead. She had fun. We got tired out.

A few photos here.

Oh, and Cara blogged Scrapaganza (finally!) and put up some really fun photos (Cara, I want that one of G and me, pretty please?), so if you want to see some more shots of G, head on over to Cest la Vie.

Good night!
